One day, a strange box arrived at the ID Plans office.
It wasn’t ticking. It didn’t have a weird smell. It wasn’t abnormally big or particularly small. No, it was nothing like that. What was odd about this box was the fact that our CRO, Seth Garber, seemed unusually excited about its contents. Which, if you know Seth, might cause you to be mildly concerned. What exactly had he bought? And what did it mean for us?

Were we going to have to perform sales pitches in the form of showtunes and get gonged if our skills weren’t up to snuff? Come up with a stellar marketing campaign in under two minutes? None of us were quite sure.
Fortunately, the gong had been put in place for good, not evil. Seth instructed us that anytime any of us had a win – closing a deal, getting a promising new lead, basically anything we deemed as an achievement – we were to ring the gong. It would be a fun way to celebrate each other’s success and motivate one another.
Soon enough, we all got into it. Some of us would tap it lightly, some would hit with all their might, but it quickly became a part of the culture of ID Plans. Now, if you come to our Tampa headquarters – or even if you’re on a call with one of our team members – you’re likely to hear the distinctive ring of our gong with a smattering of applause afterward. It’s amazing how often it happens, which is a true testament to the hard work of all our team members.
The point of this story – and this blog post – is that motivation doesn’t necessarily have to be financial. Sure, bonus checks are nice, but there are plenty of ways to reward your team for a job well done, and they can be as simple as encouraging them to strike a gong.
